LETTER TO PARENTS
2014
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
First of all, we would like to wish a very warm welcome to you and your child entering Grade 5. We are very excited be your child’s teachers this year. The 3 teachers are Mr. Jason Gledhill, Mr. David Best and Mr. Gary Herbison. The 3 assistants are Ms. Zaynab Hamasaid, Mrs Joanna Petratou and Mr. Shalaw Shukur.
We are looking forward to a very exciting, fun and productive year. This is my third year at IDBEC and am looking forward to have a great year with your child in this class. Entering grade 5 your child will be looked upon as a senior member of the Primary Years Programme. This role entails greater responsibilities and expectations upon your child; they will also have the opportunity to be seen as leaders and role models among their younger primary year students. A main event for us this year will be the Grade 5 Exhibition.
The classes have concentrated on establishing in-class rules, routines and an essential agreement, which will be the foundation for the rest of the year. All children should be aware of what is expected from them and we encourage them to communicate this with you. If you need more information, please do not hesitate to contact the classroom teacher.
Congratulations to you in making that extra effort to have your child prepared and ready to settle back into school routines. Your child’s homework diary is already coming home, in which you will find a copy of the class timetable. Each night these books will come home with your child’s homework and notices. I am continuing at grade 5 to give the responsibility of filling out these diaries to the students.
We have specialist classes such as Physical Education, Visual Art, Music, ICT, Kurdish, Turkish and Arabic. Their teachers for these specialist subjects are as follows.
· Mr.. will be taking the students for PE (Physical Education)
Could you please make sure that you child has the following:
· A refillable named drink bottle for water
· A hat for the hot days
· Breakfast before coming to school
· A bedtime that is appropriate for your child to be rested and ready for school
· A study time area set aside at home and a time allocation for homework tasks.
If you have any queries or concerns, please feel free to visit your child’s teacher in the classroom or email us on [email protected] ; [email protected]; [email protected]
Alternatively, you can write a note in the homework diary.
We look forward to meeting you again at the Parent Teacher Conferences on October 1st when we will discuss how your child is doing in Grade 5.
Kind Regards,
Jason Gledhill, David Best, Gary Herbison

MEET THE TEAM
DAVID BEST (5B)
My name is David Best. This is my second year at IDBEC. Before arriving in Kurdistan, I taught in International Baccalaureate schools in Vietnam, Thailand, China, Malaysia and Australia. Originally from England, my home is now in northern Thailand. I look forward to meeting you again during the next round of parent/teacher conferences!
JASON GLEDHILL
Jason is a proud Kiwi who grew up, trained and worked in New Zealand before gaining more global awareness through a few years travelling and a few years teaching in China. He returns to the classroom enthusiastic and energetic, looking forward to new challenges each day. He believes in child centred hands-on learning; in order to foster children in becoming active, lifelong inquiry learners and critical thinkers who have ownership and self direction over their development. He places a strong emphasis on running a varied, stimulating and optimistic classroom environment, where challenges are approached with confidence and enthusiasm. Jason believes that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is his desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing the tools with which to cultivate their own gardens of knowledge, within an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites sharing of ideas. Allowing the child's natural curiosity to direct their learning and promote respect for all things and all people.
